…it’s often the unusual, dreamlike and out of place elements that end up finding a point of focus in my work…
Sometimes the drawing and start point of a piece suggests to me something familiar and everyday like a tree form, but somewhere along the line, contrasting and alien-like details bubble up and manifest in my minds eye. Whilst usually inspired by the natural environment, it’s often the unusual, dreamlike and out of place elements that end up finding a point of focus in my work.
With this piece the bottom right corner had been the starting point from a sketch. It initially began as a more underground or cave-like environment, but began to open up as I expanded the canvas. The forms naturally evolved into more conventional tree like shapes and textures, but the orbs had been floating around my mind for a while. The orbs were partially inspired by the Honeypot ant that uses its body as a living store of liquid food for other ants! Expanded out and filled with liquid, the ants become even more translucent and I loved the way it looked like amber jewels.
