Rooted In The Ancients

Much of art production and art symbolism I see like an act of archeology, more discovery than true creation, as so much of our visual language is inherited from cultures, both present and distant past. I feel that remnants of ancient civilisations are so deeply rooted in us and our imagination in a way that we may never truly comprehend.
This piece started an a pretty abstract set of shapes and only as the image evolved did a strange stone-like face begin to be uncovered. With a fascination for archeology, ancient civilisations and world mythology, I wanted to create grandeur and importance for the piece. So adding stars and an almost nebula feel for the background felt like a good way of suggesting great expanses of space-time for the realm of ancient worshipped gods.
