Sometimes a piece of work blossoms, flowers and bursts forth into existence with an energy and vitality seemingly its own, with me merely a conduit for it to flow through. These shimmering and golden moments of ecstatic revelation are the reason I keep mining the unconscious, even through my darker days of artistic struggle.
This piece stemmed from a sketch that was produced in springtime and partly inspired by the flowers I saw emerging on my daily walks in nature locally to me. Whilst not directly sketched from a specific flower, the daily sightings were definitely percolating around my imagination at the time. I had in my mind something more ethereal and light when I started to add colour and flesh this sketch out, but it began to take on a richness of colour and texture that I hadn’t foreseen. One thing that did definitely did stem from observation of flowers was translucency and the way light shines through layers and affects texture and pattern. Partly the light artefacts that thread through the piece are a device to emphasise this translucency.
